IoT a Necessity in 2020

Updated: Jul 16, 2020

At a time of such pandemic, where Covid-19 has become the root of all evil, social distancing is now a standard for life. After all, It is a time that basically promotes untouchability as a necessary precaution.

People are refraining from getting out of their houses. And, those who are forced to, are trying to keep themselves away from anything or everything. This situation has not only taught humanity several valuable lessons but has also shown how vulnerable we could be as a species.

While the world is putting every ounce of effort to find a potential cure to this disease, the life of the general population cannot be halted. Even if there is an apocalypse going on, we still need to go out to fulfill our daily necessities to keep on living.

And it is due to the lack of accessibility that has forced the world to put themselves in harm's way just to fulfill basic necessities.

This is where IoT(Internet of Things) steps in. IoT, in general, represents automation and automation represents accessibility. May it be in the fields of technology, manufacturing, healthcare, or services, IoT simplifies everything and make it more accessible while increasing overall control of the process.

How IoT makes life more accessible?

The basic application of IoT is to make things smart enough so they can relay data over the internet. This not only makes any device more accessible but also makes it reliable. As IoT has developed over the years, it has given a great boost to AI technology, making automation an affordable luxury.

Back in the days where a simple task like unlocking and locking a car door was a practice of inserting the key and physically doing it, is now just a matter of your distance from your vehicle. IoT in general has made our daily tasks a lot easier which in turn saves a lot of time and effort. From doing cashless payments to owning self-driving tesla, IoT has opened a totally new aspect of life.

As of today, IoT technology can turn almost every human-tech interaction into a contact-less process in terms of controls and interaction. Not only that, but IoT also holds the potential for replacing our current tech into a more advanced, sophisticated, and accessible tech via automation.

A simple example would be, current biometric attendance system can be replaced with an AI-based facial recognition system for updating the employee's attendance.

In our homes, we can install IoT based appliances, while using voice as a means of interaction.

This will reduce the surface contacts for operating appliances while giving you the ability to monitor them anytime and place. It is also very helpful at the time of pandemic where living is all about social-distancing.

With the advancement in technologies, IoT implementation for personal use has also become an affordable luxury. Gone are the days when smart devices and automation systems were used to be very expensive. Now the setup cost has come down from ~$500 to less than ~$150 (less than ~10000 INR) making accessibility more appealing to the lower class.
